GARDEN OF PEACE  -  A MILLENNIUM PROJECT
RANELAGH GARDENS, CHELSEA - 2000

The subject for this competition was an area of the existing Ranelagh Gardens at Chelsea and consisted of a large 'raised' area of ground quite heavily plated with mature trees and shrubs.

The competition required a 'Millenium' subject to represent 'Peace' and could include buildings, seats, scupture etc.

My submission for this garden was in the form of a Rainbow.

My thinking was that the Rainbow was a symbol of Peace and I did not want to use the 'obvious' 'Dove of Peace'.

Also, I believed that a garden with little or no structural conversion that relied simply on the seasons of the year and 'Nature' to create the effect required was very desirable.

The cost would also be very reasonable.

The rainbow was to be created using mainly perennials and bulbs, together with some annual bedding and arranged to provide colour for most of the flower season.

These are some of the sketches that accompanied my submission.

Unfortunately, the organisers and judges of the competition decided that no satisfactory submission was received. The project did not therefore proceed.
